Beyond the Degree: How to Trust Your Gut and Check the Credentials When Choosing a Therapist
  1. Introduction: From Client to Counsellor "My journey into counselling began in 2015, not in a classroom, but in the counsellor’s chair. Experiencing the profound relief of being heard—without judgment—in a safe, held space transformed me. It ignited a passion that led me to embark on my training in 2019 and graduate in 2023. Today, I don’t just hold that space for others; I know exactly how vulnerable it feels to be on the other side.
  2. The Core Principle: The Equal Relationship "The most important thing to know is this: your therapist is not 'above' you. We are not the experts on your life; you are. We are two humans on an equal journey. We learn from you just as much as you learn from the space we hold. If you ever feel that a therapist is positioning themselves as an authority figure rather than a partner, trust that your intuition is likely flagging a mismatch."
  3. The Mirror of the Room: Why We Get the Clients We Need "In my own professional supervision, a frequent and beautiful reminder shared among us is this: we get the clients we need.

In the world of therapy, there is a belief that the people who cross our path are not random. The universe, in its own way, brings us together for a reason. Often, the very themes a client is navigating are the ones that invite the counsellor to look deeper into their own self-reflection.

It is important for you, as a client, to know that I do not view myself as 'higher' than you, nor do I view you as 'lower' than me. We are two humans on an equal journey. When we sit together in that space, it is a shared experience. I am holding a safe, non-judgmental container for you, but I am also learning and growing from the courage and honesty you bring into the room.

This realization should hopefully take some of the pressure off. You aren't just 'a client' showing up for 'a professional'; you are an equal partner in a healing dynamic. When you feel that sense of resonance with a therapist, it’s often because your respective journeys are meant to intersect at that moment to facilitate growth for us both."

  1. The "Body-Mind" Checklist: Trusting Your Instincts
  • The Felt Sense: "Therapy is a somatic experience. Do you feel physically safe when you walk into the room or join the call? Is your nervous system settling, or are you on high alert? Trust that gut instinct—your body often knows if a connection is safe long before your brain does."
  • The Energy Check: "Pay attention to the energy you receive. Do you feel truly seen and heard? Is there a sense of mutual respect?"
  1. The Non-Negotiables: Credentials Matter
  • Check the Accreditation: "While intuition is the guide, credentials are the foundation. Always verify that your therapist is accredited with recognized professional bodies like the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) or UKCP (UK Council for Psychotherapy). This ensures they adhere to strict ethical frameworks and professional standards."
  1. Professional Additions: Making It Work
  • The "Fit" Period: "It is completely okay not to know immediately if they are 'the one.' Most therapists offer an initial consultation. Use it to ask questions. If it doesn't click after a few sessions, you have the right to look for a better fit. You are the customer in this relationship."
  • The "Safe Challenge": "A good therapist will hold space, but they will also challenge your patterns gently. If you feel like you are being 'coddled' without ever actually growing, or conversely, if you feel attacked, bring it up. How they respond to your feedback will tell you everything you need to know about their professionalism."
  1. Conclusion: You Are the Expert "Remember, the universe often brings us exactly who we need, but you must be an active participant in that process. You are the expert on your own life. Choose someone who respects that expertise as much as you do."
  2. Professional Disclaimer
  • These reflections are drawn from my personal experience and my work within my counselling practice. Please note: if you are living with a mood disorder, are currently navigating mental health challenges, or are on medication, please always consult your doctor or a qualified healthcare professional before beginning new therapeutic techniques like breathwork or deep trauma work. Your physical and psychological safety is the absolute priority.
