When we feel overwhelmed, our brains often default to a "reactive" state. This practice is designed to help you shift back to a "responsive" state, moving from being consumed by your emotions to being curious about them.
The Practice: A Four-Step Process
1. Check-In (Body & Breath): Pause and scan your body. Note where the emotion "lives," but remember: it is perfectly okay if you don't feel it anywhere in particular. There is no right or wrong answer—just your personal practice.
2. Name It (The Emotion Wheel): Use an Emotion Wheel to identify exactly what you are experiencing. Naming is a powerful act that takes the sting out of a feeling because you are finally acknowledging what is happening.
3. Visualise (Colour & Image): Give your emotion an image and a *colour*. This helps externalise the feeling, creating a healthy, observational distance between you and the emotion.
4. Centre (Breathwork): Use your breath to anchor yourself. As you breathe, hold space for the emotions you've named, accepting that it is perfectly okay to feel three or four different things at once.
The Benefits: Why This Matters
Shifting from Consumed to Curious: Naming your emotions creates observational space, allowing you to view your feelings rather than being completely overtaken by them.
Lowering Internal Pressure: By acknowledging and labelling your feelings, you reduce the intensity of the experience, which helps your nervous system settle.
Deepening Self-Connection: Connecting your feelings to physical sensations (or noting the absence of them) grounds you firmly in the present moment.
Fostering Unconditional Acceptance: This practice reinforces that there is no "right" way to feel, promoting deep self-compassion and empowering you to be exactly where you need to be.
