Gaslighting

Gaslighting, a harmful form of psychological manipulation, involves the abuser sowing doubt and confusion in the victim's mind to exert control. Recognizing gaslighting is crucial as it can affect individuals in personal and professional settings, regardless of their strength or intelligence.

5 Common types of Gaslighting

1) Minisming/Dismissing Feelings:

The gaslighter dismisses or minimizes the victim's emotions or experiences, often telling them they are overreacting or that their feelings are invalid.

They could use common phrases like 'it's all in your head' or 'you are too sensitive.'

Remember, speaking your truth is empowering and your self-respect is non-negotiable.

2) Abusing Power:

Watch out for phrases implying dependency like 'you need us to succeed in your career.'

Please seek comfort your strength intimidates them, hence the manipulation.

3) Shifting Blame:

Document discrepancies like unfulfilled promises and fabricated scenarios. Stay vigilant and keep records of all interactions.

4) Using Manipulation and Control to Isolate the Victim for their Support Network:

Gaslighters use various tactics to control the victim, such as isolating them from friends and family, controlling their access to information, or making them feel dependent on the gaslighter.

Be cautious of threats of breaking confidentiality for seeking support.

Understand that their fear of losing control drives them to isolate you.

5) Outright Lying and Belittling The Victim:

This involves the gas lighter knowingly fabricating stories or information, often about events or actions, to manipulate the victim into doubting their own memory or perception.

As well as using tactics like belittling your success and labelling you as aggressive when you stand up for yourself. You deserve respect and fair treatment, regardless of their attempts to undermine you.

Remember the manipulation is about their fear of losing control, not your worth. Once exposed, gaslighters typically retreat. You are not alone, and you do not have to feel trapped by their deceitful tactics.
